Second COVID-19 booster flagged for older Australians

Older Australians could soon be offered a second COVID-19 booster shot in what would be the start of an annual coronavirus immunisation program. The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation is expected to provide advice to the federal government within the next three weeks.“It’s more likely than not there will be a booster recommended for those above a certain age. Sixty-five is the most likely age,” Hunt says.

“(ATAGI are) well advanced, they’ve been doing big research on immunity, on waning (immunity) and on the situation around the world.

“The most likely direction - which is not in any way to preempt the decision but just to be completely transparent about the latest thinking - is they are potentially going to recommend a second booster which would then be essentially the start of an annual program for people 65 and above.”

The Deputy Chief Health Officer expects immunosuppressed people to be a part of the group to receive a second booster.
